Andrea:

When Piero called us, over six years ago, we went to meet him with quite obscure ideas that weren’t very applicable. After that encounter, Simone and I realized that it still wasn’t the right moment, and we said to ourselves that we must take our time, because light is a material difficult to operate, to manipulate. We wanted to understand what its essence was, so we spent two full years exploring light in every way, from a fire to the latest LED lamp; That was an important exercise for us to be able to approach Flos.

Simone:

We are probably unusual designers; We are fascinated by objects but not necessarily the design, meaning there aren’t many companies that we’d like to work with. But Flos was certainly a good place to start.

"The interesting thing with lighting design, is that the project is not so much about the design of the object, but rather the design of the light itself. Being able to work with such an abstract material is certainly one of the most interesting and fascinating things."

The verbal part, the discussion is at the center of our work. The beauty of working in a pair is that the result is an amazing compromise between two trains of thought.

Andrea:

Having spent more than ten years in Holland, we’ve rediscovered our roots a bit more. In Italy, you’re always surrounded by marvelous architecture and incredible displays of the past; We have a bit of this heritage that we just can’t shake off. Coming here has made us look back at our artistic heritage, at our origins – it’s made us rediscover how wonderful it was to come from the places we did.

According to the famous cliché, creativity needs constant stimulus, but living in a world where connections are very quick, both digitally and physically, no one really needs to live in a metropolis anymore. For us, Amsterdam is the ideal place. Although we don’t speak the language, we perceive it as more of a blank canvas, a space where we can concentrate, where we don’t have noise.

"Since we met, and began working and thinking together, we’ve realized that everything we’ve spoken about has had to do with design."

Simone:

In Formafantasma, I am the hellion and Andrea is the one who makes the decisions, who keeps the time, the one who knows when we have a deadline. Working together keeps us in balance, giving us the possibility to be both precise and very free. The key to Formafantasma is the balancing act of these two things, in our opinion.

We quarrel a lot as designers, but it works well. Obviously, we do so instinctively but in good nature. The central aspect of our work is the verbal part, the discussion. We aren’t designers that design, we are designers that discuss the work.

Andrea:

People often ask us, “What are your inspirations, what is the tool that you use to design?” We say that our tools for designing are words, that we speak, and speak, and speak and write; the design is the last thing we do. As a matter of fact, most of our objects start from an existing shape, or they simply aren’t connected to a design, they’re always the outcome of our discussions.
