Almendra – the “branch of light” by designer Patricia Urquiola – is a customizable modular lighting system. The Almendra lighting system can feature horizontal or vertical elements on one or more articulated branches, creating a weightless composition. Patricia Urquiola and the idea that inspired the Almendra suspension lamp: “The Almond (Almendra in Spanish) is like a seed, an oval container that opens up to let the fruit out. For Flos, I thought of a suspension module inspired by this small shell when it’s open. Something natural but at the same time mechanical, simple, and poetic.” – Patricia Urquiola And indeed, the Almendra module’s shape hints at that of two open almond shells connected by a central pin from where the light is diffused evenly. Almendra and sustainable production: This modular suspended lighting system was conceived to minimize its environmental impact, in line with Flos’ efforts toward sustainable production. As a result, it meets circular economy goals as it’s made of bioplastic obtained from a paper industry by-product. Moreover, every stage of this sustainable lighting system’s life cycle – from raw material selection to disposal – complies with the ISO standards for life cycle assessment.
