Flos introduces Arrangements at Milan Design Week 2018
“I have always been fascinated with the parallel that exists between Lighting and Jewelry. Starting from the simple fact of how each piece relates to the human scale: one is designed to be worn on the body whereas the other is made to decorate the space someone occupies. I’m challenged in how the delicate nature of something small can be translated spatially and still manage to retain its preciousness in the way materials are presented. It is no coincidence that the word ‘pendant’ has a double meaning. Existing both as a piece of jewelry that hangs from a chain worn round the neck, and a light designed to hang from the ceiling.” – Michael Anastassiades
Midway between a light sculpture and an industrial design object, Arrangements is a modular system of geometric LED elements that can be combined in multiple compositions as single or even connected chandeliers. The modules are easily fixed together electrically and mechanically, balancing perfectly on each other to create the dramatic effect of a big chain of light. Each combination can be changed any time, with a different order, type or quantity of elements, with no need of technical assistance.
The magnificent installation expands throughout the entire Flos showroom, while the long vitrine in the external atrium previews the concept of this extraordinary lighting project with a sophisticated display of miniaturized geometries, combined in the shape of a Flos logo.
Visitors will be able to discover in a very simple, intuitive way, through dedicated tablets, how to configure their own chandeliers in lots of original combinations, starting from each single element, according to their needs or purely their liking. The configurator is called ‘Make your Arrangements’ and is available on the web site flos.com. It is being launched during the Milan presentation, at the same time of the new product. Researched and developed by Flos, it is characterized by a user friendly language which allows users to compose and save their desired configuration of Arrangements.
In the showroom, tablets will also be available for the public to watch the short film Michael. Directed by Leone Balduzzi of C41, this is the second film produced by Flos for ‘The Light Minded’, a series of cutting edge video-stories on the creative minds that collaborate with Flos, which are published at regular frequency on the new web site flos.com. The film Michael, featuring the story of Michael Anastassiades, reveals with delicacy and poetic intimacy the life, vision and creative inspiration of one of the most talented designers of our time.
Michael Anastassiades has been working successfully with Flos since 2013. The light objects he has designed over the years, including String Lights, IC Lights, Copycat and Captain Flint, have won top industry awards and been hugely successful with the international public. The poetic nature of his designs, combined with his skillful use of highly innovative lighting technology solutions, makes every work unique and surprisingly emotional.
