Flos is delighted to be the Supporting Sponsor of Cambio, a new major exhibition by Formafantasma -the Italian art and design duo based in Amsterdam- presented by the Serpentine Galleries from 4 March to 17 May 2020 at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery, London.

Cambio (from the medieval Latin cambium, ‘change, exchange’) is an ongoing investigation conducted by Formafantasma into the extraction, production and distribution of wood products. The industry’s tentacular supply chain has grown out of the bioprospecting that took place throughout colonial territories during the nineteenth century, and has affected the entire biosphere. This exhibition aims to put into question the role that design can play in translating emerging environmental awareness into informed, collaborative responses.

Formafantasma said: “Cambio is an attempt to expand our understanding of what design can be, going beyond the finished object in order to include its disciplinary boundaries: forestry techniques and timber legislations then become tools for designing a better future for our forests; scientific knowledge goes hand-in-hand with environmental activism in fighting illegal logging, and the equilibrium of trans-national geopolitics is redefined in the struggle between conservation and consumption.”

Cambio is the third exhibition of design in the Serpentine’s history. With this show, Formafantasma confirm their unparalleled talent as practitioners who can operate between the traditional disciplines of design, contemporary art, and research.

Formafantasma’s first product of industrial design was the lamp WireRing for Flos (2017), a sculptural and poetic exercise in reduction, which has been acquired in the permanent collections of the most important art and design museums in the world, such as The Art Institute of Chicago, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and now also featured at the Serpentine Shop. This successful design has been followed by the suspended lamp Wireline, also created by using an elegantly-looped power cable as a major design feature. Wireline’s much-awaited launch is scheduled for Fall 2020.

Flos’s sponsorship of Cambio reconfirms the company’s traditional support to high-profile cultural initiatives and heralds its ever growing commitment towards a responsible research, thinking and production of design icons for a better future.
