“All these control systems and the possibility that lighting solutions become smart and they are controllable, and that we can influence the setup is something new and we need to learn to take care of these possibilities”

How automation will affect the human experience when it comes to lighting?
We don’t want people to be overruled by control systems, on the other hand, we do need control systems to control them, and in most of the bigger commercial projects we see a sophisticated building with a control system, which overrules lighting in general, but we try to give back to people some capability to control the lighting and to set up a kind of private environment. I think the average between being controlled and being a part of the control is the most important thing.
The boundaries between indoor and outdoor lighting are getting more and more blurred. Is this the outcome of a new approach to architecture or a human need?
In general, in our working environment, in our society, the outdoor environment becomes a part of our private life and on the other hand, there are people using outdoor spaces in their private homes as a part of their living environment. We always try to integrate the outdoor atmosphere with the indoor environment, so for us, it has always been a part of design, even if it is outdoor, and a different environment from the indoor.
When it comes to automation, where do you think the future is headed to?
All these control systems and the possibility that lighting solutions become smart and they are controllable, and that we can influence the setup is something new and we need to learn to take care of these possibilities, so the question is how far we would like to go, and I think it’s important that people are able to control these systems, that there is a certain setup in which there are boundaries within people are able to hold control.
For that reason, for example, if you can tune the white point, you have to set up a certain range in between people can choose, which should be the range which is healthy for people, unhealthy environment is not good if it is possible to set up, so it needs certain boundaries and these boundaries should be set up by engineers, scientific working engineers, and authorities as well.
Flos builds its products using advanced technology, without any compromise in terms of design quality. How do you take advantage of this in your practice?
We, as German lighting designers, are always quality oriented, if we are using a product, quality is one of the very big topics to take into consideration when choosing a product, so Flos is a well-known company for us and if we ever think about Flos, we think about design.
Flos is now offering products which are serving even commercial and architectural projects and for that reason quality is a big topic for us because those products should be reliable and long-lasting and as far as I can see it here on the fair [Light&Building 2018, Frankfurt], I’m very satisfied by the product Flos is offering to us.
