A world of one’s own

Japanese design studio Nendo created a modular box that is a light fixture, an accessory and a piece of furniture in one. Gaku allows users to create a miniature world of their own. Here we show how people with different interests and preferences – a jewelry lover, a bookworm and a plant enthusiast – might use Gaku to create their own still lifes: from pendant lamps to bowls, vases and wireless phone chargers

I have always loved Nendo and its aesthetics, so when I saw Gaku I fell in love immediately.

I appreciate design that is more than the sum of its parts. And Gaku is exactly that. I love that it is not just a light, rather an object that looks great no matter where I place it in our home – and that keeps revealing new ways in which it can be used.

I collect trinkets and miniatures. The Gaku frame has become a sort of stage where small stories take place thanks to new objects I get from friends. Right now, it hosts a lucky goat.
